At Birchgrove Public School, we believe every student should be challenged, supported and inspired to reach their potential.
Our Inspire – High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) approach identifies and nurtures students with high potential across the intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical domains.
Through high-quality teaching, extension, enrichment and a wide range of opportunities within and beyond the classroom, we encourage students to think deeply, take intellectual risks, explore their strengths and turn potential into talent.
Nurturing potential at Birchgrove
Our teachers use a range of evidence to identify students' strengths, interests and learning needs and provide opportunities for their potential to develop.
Learning experiences are differentiated to provide appropriate challenge, encouraging students to think critically, solve complex problems and extend their learning.
Students can explore and develop their talents through STEM, mathematics, creative arts, music, sport, debating, leadership and other enrichment opportunities.
Students are encouraged to participate in competitions, representative programs and external opportunities that connect their talents with experiences beyond our school.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) supports students whose learning needs may require greater challenge, complexity, depth or pace.
High potential can be demonstrated across four domains: intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical. Gifted students are those whose potential significantly exceeds that of students of the same age.
At Birchgrove, HPGE is not simply about providing “more work”. It is about providing the right level of challenge, through differentiated teaching, enrichment, extension and, where appropriate, acceleration.
Inspire in action
High potential and gifted education is embedded in everyday teaching and learning at Birchgrove. Students are provided with opportunities to explore their strengths, take on new challenges and pursue areas of interest both within and beyond the classroom.
Our teachers use evidence-informed practices to provide appropriate challenge and extension. This may include:
- differentiated learning experiences
- flexible student groupings
- enrichment and extension
- opportunities for acceleration where appropriate
- complex problem-solving and critical thinking
- student-led learning and leadership
- strengths-based feedback, goal setting and self-assessment.
Students can extend their interests and talents through a diverse range of opportunities, including:
- APSMO Maths Olympiad
- debating
- SparkSquad coding, LEGO Robotics and STEM
- Young Archies and Operation Art
- music ensembles, strings, recorder, percussion and junior and senior choirs
- PSSA and representative sport
- leadership through Student Parliament
- buddy programs
- competitions, workshops and other enrichment opportunities.
